Villagers enjoy sunny fete

Joe Manning, aged seven, has a go at splatting the rat

A TRADITIONAL fete was held in bright sunshine on Saturday followed by a party in the evening.

The annual Greatford village fete took place at Greatford Village Hall in Carlby Road and included traditional games, stalls selling afternoon teas and homemade cakes, a beer tent and demonstrations.

There was also a car boot and a party from 4pm, which included live music, a beer tent and a barbecue.

Olympic Games Maker Tracey Radnall, who lives in the village and is penning a book on her experiences, attended the fete with torchbearer Andy McPherson.

Lisa Cuthbert, one of the organisers with her husband Trevor, said: “It went well and I am sure the weather helped.

“There was a really good turnout, particularly towards the end of the fete when people could stay to watch the bands.”

The event raised money for the village hall and the amount is still being counted.

One week to to fete and Party in the Park

The countdown is one. Recipe books are being dusted off ready for the great Greatford bake off – tasty results for sale on the tea and cake stall! The usual fun of the fete will include testing hand to eye co-ordination (I mean golf and skittles, rather than not missing your mouth when tucking in to tasty grub); seeing how many penalty kicks it takes to crack Richard Anderson our iron man goalie; bouncy castle and for a rest browse the book stall.
Opens at 2pm (we know the yellow signs say 2:30pm but we will be opening at 2pm)

Cakes to Nigel Ashby please – either the day before or on the morning to the White House opposite the playing fields

See you there !

Village fete Saturday 15 September 2012

All the fun of a very traditional English village fete combined with a chance to let your hair down with a burger and a beer and dance away the evening to Hissing Sid. The village fete’s on Saturday 15th of September. It will have fresh new attractions and more things to see and do than last year.

The party starts at 2 PM. There will be a lively Ministry of Dance show, and lots of choice of things to eat and drink from the tea and cake stall, beer tent, and for the first time a sweet stall. Car boot sale pitches cost £5 pounds in advance, £6.50 on the day.

Homegrown talent will be on show from Greatford’s very own Neil Diamond tribute act. The party will finish at 8 PM.

As usual this event depends entirely on the generosity of people in the village. Donations can be dropped off with Lisa Cuthbert at 16 Baston Road, alternatively to the Village Hall 5-7 PM Friday 7 September.

Cakes can be left with Nigel Ashby opposite the village playing field. Offers of help gratefully received. Please ring Trevor or Lisa on 561946.

The Great Greatford Bake Off

Celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be a piece of cake thanks to The Great Greatford Bake off on Sunday 3 June.

Judging by the sumptuous cakes donated every year by the great and the
good of Greatford in support of village hall fundraisers or church funds, we have more than our fair share of clever cooks.

To add a competitive edge to the Jubilee picnic on the village hall playing fields organisers have issued a challenge.

So whether you are inspired by Fanny Craddock, Nigella or fancy doing a Delia – it’s time to get practising for the big day.

Competition entries must be submitted by 3.30pm for judging to commence at 4pm.

And the best bit is that once the winners have been announced we can all tuck in to eat the entries.

The afternoon fun starts at 2pm. Please bring a picnic and something to sit on as there will be only a limited number of tables and chairs provided.

This is a once in a lifetime weekend so lets do our best to make it a memorable one for the whole village, young and old!

Winter Wonderland Saturday 17 December 2011

Quote

THERE is still time to buy your tickets for this year’s Christmas Party.

The hall is set to be transformed into a sparkling white winter wonderland and it’s hoped that guests will get into the Christmas spirit by dressing up on a theme. There will be spot prizes for the best dressed male and female. Tickets cost £10, or £15 to include a piping hot meal delivered to the hall from Boundary Fish and Chip shop in Deeping St James.

Lisa Tharby, the creative driving force behind this year’s event, says: ”

I can’t wait. I have been planning this for a year and it will be bigger and better than last year. The hall will look great and it’s the perfect start to the festive season. Time to meet with old friends, make some new ones, and all within a short stroll of your home. What’s not to like?”

At last all the work has been done. Floors sanded and varnished, window frames replaced, new walls built around the old frame and a brand new kitchen installed. Thanks to very generous grants from the Lottery Fund and other benefactors, combined with the dedicated fund raising efforts involving everyone in the village, Greatford now has a fantastic newly spruced up hall for us to enjoy. Now get your dancing shoes on and come on down for a bit of Strictly Greatford!
